Estar conjugation and its accented forms

estar: to be (states, location)

Estar has a strong preterite (estuve) and a yo form in -oy, but what trips up most learners is the written accent: está, estás and esté carry it, while esta and este are different words.

Usage

Estar for states, places and actions in progress

Estar describes how something is at the moment and where it is: estoy cansado, la sopa está fría, Madrid está en el centro de España. Even a permanent location takes estar; what matters is that it is a location, not how long it lasts.

Estar + gerund forms the progressive: estoy leyendo, estábamos cenando. Use it for actions in progress, not for plans. “I’m leaving tomorrow” is me voy mañana or salgo mañana, not estoy saliendo mañana.

Some uses don’t follow the “temporary” rule. Death takes estar even though it is permanent: está muerto. Marital status is heard with both verbs, está casada and es casada, with estar more common in everyday speech.

Watch the accents. Está (is) and esta (this) are different words, and so are esté (subjunctive) and este (this). The accented forms are always the verb.
