Usage

Using tener without translating “to have”

English uses “to be” for states that Spanish expresses with tener + noun: tengo hambre (I’m hungry), tiene frío (she’s cold), tenemos prisa (we’re in a hurry), tienes razón (you’re right). Age works the same way: tengo treinta años, never soy treinta. Because the noun is the thing you have, intensity goes on the noun: tengo mucha hambre, not muy hambre.

Obligation is tener que + infinitive: tengo que irme. Leaving out que is one of the most common slips. For a general, impersonal obligation, Spanish switches to hay que: hay que reservar con antelación.

Tener is not the auxiliary of the perfect tenses. “I have eaten” is he comido, with haber. Tener + participle does exist, but it describes a finished result and the participle agrees with the object: tengo hechos los deberes (I have the homework done).

In the preterite, tuve often means “got” or “received”: tuve noticias de ella (I heard from her), tuvo un hijo (she had a baby). For ongoing possession in the past, use the imperfect: tenía un coche rojo.
