Usage

Pude or podía, and poder or saber

In the preterite, poder reports whether something actually happened: pude terminar (I managed to finish), no pude dormir (I couldn’t get to sleep). The imperfect describes ability or possibility in the background without saying what happened: podía ver el mar desde mi ventana.

English “can” covers both learned skill and circumstance; Spanish splits them. A skill takes saber: sé nadar. Poder is about whether conditions allow it: hoy no puedo nadar, me duele el hombro.

For polite requests, the conditional softens the question: ¿podrías ayudarme? sounds gentler than ¿puedes ayudarme? Puede que + subjunctive means “maybe”: puede que llueva. Se puede asks or states whether something is allowed: ¿se puede pasar?

The commands of poder appear in conjugation tables but are almost never used. To encourage someone, Spanish says ¡tú puedes!
