Spanish -er verb No. 4 by frequency in our list

Conjugating hacer: hag-, hic-, har- and hecho

hacer: to do or to make

Hacer changes its stem in four places (hag-, hic-, har- and the participle hecho) and spells its preterite él form hizo so the c keeps its sound.

At a glance

Where hacer breaks the pattern

Hacer is irregular in the present, preterite, future, conditional and affirmative imperative, and its past participle is hecho.

The present subjunctive, imperfect subjunctive (-ra), imperfect subjunctive (-se), future subjunctive and negative imperative are built from those forms, so they have nothing new to learn.

Commands vs the subjunctive
Only three affirmative commands have their own forms: tú haz (irregular), vos hacé and vosotros haced. Every other command, and every negative one, is the present subjunctive: haga, hagamos, hagan; no hagas.

Usage

Hacer for weather, time and making someone do something

Weather uses hacer in the third person singular: hace frío, hace sol, hizo mucho calor ayer. English says “it is”, but es frío is wrong here.

Hace + time + que says how long something has been going on, with the present tense: hace dos años que vivo aquí (I’ve lived here for two years). With the preterite, hace means “ago”: llegué hace una hora.

Hacer + infinitive means to make or have someone do something: me hizo reír, hice arreglar el coche. Hacerse means to become, often through effort: se hizo médico.

English “do” and “make” both map to hacer, but many fixed phrases use other verbs: tomar una decisión, dar un paseo, prestar atención. Hacer una pregunta is fine; hacer una decisión is an anglicism.
