Usage

Visto, vio, and ver vs mirar

Visto is the past participle of ver: he visto la película, nunca lo había visto. It also works as an adjective and in fixed phrases: está muy visto (it’s been done to death), dar el visto bueno (to give approval).

Vi and vio are one syllable, so they take no written accent, unlike regular comí or comió. The same goes for dio, fue and fui.

Ver is to see or watch: veo la tele, ¿ves aquel edificio? Mirar is to look at something on purpose: mira esto, me miró sin decir nada. Watching television can take either, but ver la tele is far more common.

In the imperfect, ver keeps its e: veía, veíamos. A regular -er verb would lose it, as in comía, so learners often write vía by analogy.

Easy to confuse

  • ve is the present él and tú command of ver, but also the tú command of ir.
  • ven is the present ellos of ver, but also the tú command of venir.
