Usage

Poner, ponerse and puesto

Poner is to put or place: pon las llaves en la mesa. It also means to switch on a device or put something on to watch or hear: pon la radio, ¿qué ponen en la tele?

Ponerse has three common meanings. With clothes, it means to put on: ponte el abrigo. With an adjective, it describes a sudden, usually temporary change: se puso rojo, me pongo nervioso. With a + infinitive, it means to start: se puso a llorar.

For a deeper or lasting change, Spanish uses other verbs: hacerse, volverse or llegar a ser. Se puso triste is a mood; se volvió desconfiado is a change in character.

Learners often regularize the participle to ponido. It is puesto: ¿dónde has puesto mis gafas?
