Usage

Saber, conocer and supe

Saber is to know facts and how to do things: sé su número, no sé si viene, sabe tocar el piano. Conocer is to know a person, place or work through familiarity: conozco a su hermana, conocemos Lima.

For skills, saber + infinitive replaces English “can”: ¿sabes conducir? (can you drive?). ¿Puedes conducir? asks whether you’re able to right now.

In the preterite, saber usually means “found out”: supe la noticia ayer (I heard the news yesterday). For knowing something over a period of time, use the imperfect: ya lo sabía.

Saber a means to taste of: sabe a limón. Que yo sepa means “as far as I know”: que yo sepa, no ha llamado. And sé with an accent is the verb; se without one is the pronoun.

Easy to confuse

  • sé is the present yo of saber, but also the tú command of ser.
