Usage

Ir a, irse and the shared preterite

Ir a + infinitive is the everyday way to talk about the future: voy a llamarte, vamos a ver. In conversation it is often more common than the future tense itself.

Irse means to leave, with the focus on departing: me voy (I’m off), se fue sin decir nada. Voy without me usually needs a destination: voy al mercado. The exception is ¡ya voy! (I’m coming!).

Vamos does double duty: it is the present “we go” and the nosotros command “let’s go”. The negative command switches to the subjunctive: no vayamos.

The preterite and the imperfect subjunctive are identical to those of ser: fui, fue, fueron, fuera. Fue a casa (he went home) and fue difícil (it was difficult) are told apart by what follows.

In voseo regions the vos command is andá, borrowed from andar: andá a dormir.

Easy to confuse

  • The whole preterite is shared with ser: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Only context tells them apart.
  • The whole imperfect subjunctive (-ra) is shared with ser: fuera, fueras, fuéramos, fuerais, fueran. Only context tells them apart.
