Spanish -er verb No. 53 by frequency in our list

Volver conjugation: vuelvo and vuelto

volver: to return

Volver has two traps: o → ue in the stressed present (vuelvo, but volvemos) and a past participle that isn’t volvido but vuelto.

At a glance

Where volver breaks the pattern

Volver is irregular in the present, and its past participle is vuelto.

  • o → ue when the stem is stressed

vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, vuelven · Present

  • Irregular past participle vuelto

    vuelto · all compound tenses

The present subjunctive, affirmative imperative and negative imperative are built from those forms, so they have nothing new to learn.

Usage

Volver a, volverse and devolver

Volver a + infinitive means to do something again: volví a llamar (I called again), no vuelvas a hacerlo. It often sounds more natural than adding otra vez.

Volver is to return, to come or go back: vuelvo a casa a las seis. To return an object is devolver: devuélveme el libro. Regresar means the same as volver and is more common in much of Latin America.

Volverse describes a change in someone’s character or state, often a lasting one: se volvió loco, se ha vuelto muy callado. For a short change of mood, ponerse is more usual.

The participle vuelto is irregular, and so are those of its relatives: devolver gives devuelto and envolver gives envuelto. Volver en sí means to come round after fainting: tardó unos minutos en volver en sí.
