Oír conjugation: oigo, oyes, oyó

oír: to hear

At a glance

Where oír breaks the pattern

Oír is irregular in the present, preterite and affirmative imperative.

The present subjunctive, imperfect subjunctive (-ra), imperfect subjunctive (-se), future subjunctive and negative imperative are built from those forms, so they have nothing new to learn.

Usage

Oír or escuchar

Oír is to hear, whether you mean to or not: ¿oyes ese ruido? Escuchar is to listen, with attention: escucha bien lo que te digo. As in English, you can hear without listening.

In everyday speech the line blurs. Many speakers say no te escucho on a bad phone line, where no te oigo is the traditional form.

Oye, or oiga for usted, is the usual way to get someone’s attention: oye, ¿tienes un momento? It is the command form, used much like English “hey” or “listen”.

The accent is part of the spelling: oír, oído, oímos. Without it, oimos would read as two syllables, oi-mos, instead of three. Oído is also a noun: the ear as the organ of hearing (the outer ear is oreja) and the sense itself, as in tener buen oído (to have a good ear).

Easy to confuse

  • oímos is both the present and preterite nosotros form; only context tells them apart.
